"Died in action doing what she was bred to do."

Bear Pen Fancy II was a joy to hunt. She was a favorite daughter of two of the all-time favorite Bear Pen hounds, Bronco and Fancy. Both of Fancy II's parents were inducted into the NPHA Hall of Fame.

Fancy II started extremely young. She and her litter mate, Bear Pen Bronco Billy, were hard tree dogs on coon at 5 months of age!

Fancy II was hunted on coon for most of her life but in her latter years, Dad and my brother Randy hunted her on bear in West Virginia and the western mountains of Virginia. It was in those Virginia mountains that she died while hunting bear.

Fancy II scored over 900 points in a UKC Nite Hunt in Marcellus, Michigan with Todd Kellam handling her. She earned a nice high-scoring Plott trophy for the effort.

Fancy II was absolutely straight on coon and bear and would quicly "tell" on other dogs that were running trash by refusing to run off game and giving a distinctive "booger" bark when an off track was being run by other hounds.

I hunted Fancy II a lot with long time friend Mark Blount of Three Rivers, Michigan. We treed a lot of coons with Fancy II and his English dog Jack.

When Fancy II was around ten years of age, my brother hauled her bear hunting with no intention of turning her loose. The weather was terrible with ice and snow and cold temperatures. When the party needed a hound to start an cold bear track, Randy relented and turned Fancy II loose. She took the track and wound up in high country when another snow storm hit. There was no way to get to her through the snow. She moved for several days before the signal became stationary. After the spring thaw, Randy found her dead under a big rock outcropping where she had sought shelter. Bear hunting in the southern Appalachians in December is too tough for most. Few roads exist and it's hard to impossible to follow dogs in some areas.

Fancy II was bred to John Sturgill's GRNITECH Tack II dog and produced some good pups in the litter.

Fancy II had the nose and excellent treeing ability of her parents, Bronco and Bear Pen Fancy.
