"A maltese brindle Bear Pen Plott!"
Bear Pen Blue Joe has the distinction of being the only maltese brindle Plott that was kenneled at the Bear Pen. He had a littermate, Bear Pen Plott Tanner that was also a maltese brindle. The blue brindle factor is a product of a recessive gene that manifests itself when each of the parents carry the gene. The maltese factor in this hound came down from Smithdeal's Blue Joe, an ancestor in the pedigree of Bear Pen Blue Joe's sire, Bear Pen Hoss.
Blue Joe was a hard fighting bear dog. He was purchased as a puppy by Chuck Deshler of Ohio and was later returned to our kennel when Chuck was unable to hunt him. He ultimately was sold to Rick Hinman of Michigan as a start dog on bear. This was after he was quite old and afflicted with arthritis.
One of the best remembered stories of hunting with Blue Joe was the time a bear was chased into a rock cliff or cave if you will. Joe would close on the bear and the bear would literally knock him out of the cave. As soon as he could get his feet under him for another attack, in he would go. He inherited the grit of his sire Bear Pen Hoss, shown below.
Joe was a classic tree dog and it was a real joy to listen to him tree with his sire Hoss and his litter mate Coley.
Another memorable hunt took place on the Isaiah Kidd farm in Monroe County, West Virginia. We were hunting four dogs that night and they trailed a coon out of hearing in the Knobs area of high ridges and deep hollows. We finally were able to hear Blue Joe treeing but could not hear the others. We began walking toward Blue Joe and after an hour or so of trudging up and down those West Virginia hills and hollows, we finally could hear the other hounds treeing as well. As we neared the tree we could see that Blue Joe had climbed into the tree, explaining why we could hear him above the others. We harvested the coon and began the long walk back to the truck, a trip that would find us at the truck at daylight.
The Hoss, Coley, Blue Joe, Rowdy-line of dogs were good hounds but not the sapling-riding, hard-charging type of hounds that we would learn to love for bear hunting. They were solid, game-getters and were beautiful tree dogs to listen to on a frosty October night in those beautiful West Virginia hills.
