"The very first Bear Pen Plott"

Fielder’s June came to live at the Bear Pen in 1954 signaling the beginning of UKC registered Plott Hounds for the Fielder family. Homon had some grade Plotts prior to June. June and her mother Daisy were the hounds that kindled bear hunting fever in the heart of Homon Fielder. He was hunting a grade Black and Tan at the time he first went coon hunting with June and Daisy. They belonged to W.O. “Opal” Bennett of Crow, WV. Homon bought June from Mr. Bennett. She was bred once before we got her and had two litters while we owned her. She was bred once to Petit’s Timber Tim owned by Harry Petit of Athens, Ohio and once to Kidd’s Rock owned by Isaiah Kidd.

Some of the dogs in June’s 3-generation pedigree were among the first registered Plotts and have no registration numbers. The Kidd-bred dogs on her pedigree came directly from Isaiah Kidd of Sinks Grove, WV, one of the oldest Plott breeders of that era. The Owens dogs are from John Owens, an early Plott breeder from Iowa. Moffett’s Stormy is better known as Nichol’s Stormy, later owned by Rags Nichols of Cape Girardeau, MO. He was a famous stud dog of his day. Considering that June was born in 1952 and Plotts were first registered in 1946, her ancestors were among the first registered Plotts.

June was extremely cold nosed and treed or helped to tree many tough old mountain coons in her day. She was chop-mouthed on track and tree. She was a beautiful hound, almost solid black in color with a gray muzzle and no white. I can vividly recall the excitement I felt as a youngster seeing her for the first time. June produced some nice hounds including Smokey, Gypsy, and Buck, a true buckskin-colored Plott.

After looking at the head on this female in the photo above and at most of the Plotts today, I don’t believe we’ve improved their looks in fifty years, do you?
